Week 9: Space + Art

I have always been fascinated with space, stars, planets, but understanding it as a form of art is something that I am now beginning to recognize. Our solar system has been studied for many years now and over the years advancements take place and historical achievements are made. In 1512 Nicolaus Copernicus published a heliocentric model of the solar system and the sun was at the center. This sparked the beginning of understanding the sun and influenced others to study this idea. This idea helped develop the 17th century telescope, which was able to detect Bucky Balls in space. Technological advancements has allowed experts to study our atmosphere and make new discoveries.

I was fascinated with Lecture 3 regarding the role that animals have played in the launch of rocket ships. This is the first time that I have ever heard of animals being used a test subjects launched into space. Russia was the first to use a dog, Laika as a test subject. Experts monitored the heart rate and blood pressure to detect any changes that may occur in order to understand the reasoning behind it. Shortly after, a chimp was used as a test subject. This was the first creature that could respond to cues and hit buttons/levers to change any levels. In my opinion a Chimp is more practical to use as a test subject because it is closely related to human behaviors, so the researcher would have more accurate results.

After many trials and countless research, Yuri Gagarin was the first human to go orbit in space in 1961. Shortly after Allan Shepard was the first American to go into space. Following, on July 20th 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon. During his time he was able to examine and experiment the moon and return back to earth to report what he saw.  Since then there have been many men and women sent to the moon like Apollo 1 and 13, which both resulted in devastating outcomes. These are some of America's victories that will forever be remember and lives that will never be forgotten.

Recently, I watched the movie Hidden Figures and I was fascinated by all the factors that were involved in helping launch John Glenn into space. This movie depicts the overall victory and achievement of the nation and a point in time that will forever be cherished. It is so great to see the desire by our nation to discover more about space and to see this exploration continue in both public and private sectors

Comments

  1. Great jobs covering a lot of the topics discussed and maintain a specific focus on the figures who have been sent out to space. It would have been nice if you talked a bit more about Hidden Figures and related it to what was discussed in the lecture videos.

  2. The aspect that I thought was the most interesting in your post was about the animals going into space. I also was fascinated with this concept of the lecture and found it amazing that they sent animals before people into space. It would have been awesome if you talked a little more about this aspect and maybe given some more examples or other things they are doing with animals today in space.
